THANKS TO ALL THE MOTHERS

Best gift of Mother's Day was seeing my missionaries
We love our boy! He's still so CLAY!!

Hello All!

Woooooooooo! The day and age of miracles has not ceased.

First of all - THANKS TO ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE :) No matter who you are, you wouldn't be here without your mother. Fact! I know that every mom has a special place in her children's hearts, and my mom basically fills mine!! Momma Coleman is so awesome and not just a mom but a friend and a guide and just someone who is always there for you.  "All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." - Abraham Lincoln. It was so good to chat with her and my family today!

This week was full of following up with people from last week - many of whom did not want to learn - but was great.

Santi, the investigator we had been working with a lot before these last two weeks, finally was able to come to church! Yeah, Elder Yang and I had to go and get her - but some crazy answers to prayers allowed us to get there really fast and get her to church even though our plan was kind of last minute!

Also, we had 4 new investigators!! It was amazing!! One of them, Daniel, has now been texting us nonstop telling us about how much sense our doctrine makes in his mind and how he can't wait to learn again.

Here's a funny story for you. Elder Yang and I have been working together in going contacting (talking to every one we see) and knocking on doors / gates, and tons of new investigators have just been coming out of the woodwork! We know we've been really blessed. We are living the stat that I heard before my mission: "Missionaries who knock doors baptize more people than missionaries who don't - but they don't baptize the people they find knocking." People just come to the missionaries or are found through members and are prepared - because the missionaries are doing what they're supposed to do and the Lord trusts them! Read that one more time, it really blows my mind: "Missionaries who knock doors baptize more people than missionaries who don't - but they don't baptize the people they find knocking."

In accordance with that principle, we've been receiving referrals, relatives moving to members houses - anything and everything that is leading to more people hearing the Lord's message!!

There are tons of miracles and not much time - but what's important is that the Lord is putting His hand over Tawau and we are receiving the blessings of relying on the Lord entirely.

So grateful for this opportunity to serve!! I love you all and know this is the Lord's work!!

Malaysia Boleh!

So fun to have Clay's friend Grant join us for part of the call. Grant will be gone on his mission soon so the boys won't see one another until 2016.

Miracle May!!

I helped Elder Chong make 200 cream puffs for the members in celebration of Miracle May!

Elder Yang, Elder Sutherland, me and Elder Chong--love these missionaries!

Hello all!

It's Miracle May, baby.

I'm the happiest missionary in the world right now! Not really, but Elder Yang and I have been SOOO blessed! Just wait. This week was INCREDIBLE. So many blessings and miracles were poured out upon us this week. We are so so so grateful - it was truly the BEST week of my mission.

On Monday, Elder Yang and I decided to be extra vigilant in opening our mouths and talking with everyone. We're both talkative people, and normally we talk to probably 80% of the people we see, but we decided to turn up and work even harder. On Tuesday, we talked to 44 people (more if you include the ones to whom we didn't mention we were Christian because they were wearing the Muslim shawl). On Wednesday, 22 people.

We were blessed to see and meet tons of people willing to hear a short message from the Bible, from which (following the Spirit made the transition seamless) we introduced the Book of Mormon. Last week, Elder Yang and I taught 1 investigator lesson - this week, we taught 12. TWELVE!!! And seven of those had a member of the Church with us, helping and testifying about our message alongside us.

The Sabah Zone decided to turn this May into something we like to call "Miracle May". We're pretty convinced the Lord is with us this week and agrees with us that this month is going to be one of the most amazing experiences of our lives.

We have tons of return appointments with these people (10 of them were new) so we feel that we might have many new investigators this upcoming week. In our mission, the standards for reporting our efforts are pretty high. A lesson is only a lesson if it begins and ends with a prayer. Also, a new investigator can only be counted if they hear one SCHEDULED lesson (can't be spontaneous) and have a specific return appointment. We only had one new investigator this week, but this upcoming week we should have a ton of official new investigators. We had so many appointments one day, we did splits with some members, Sylvester (26) and Jason (18), to meet them all!! We were so blessed.

One miracle - we got to an appointment, and realized we had run out of Books of Mormon that day (we handed out 14 last week). SO we didn't know what to do or what to teach. Suddenly, a little girl ran up with a Book of Mormon in her hands. It appeared out of thin air. It came from NO WHERE! Apparently, an old member who just moved left it in the house, but how did the little child know that we were the ones bringing the message about this book?? And what are the odds she grabbed the Book of Mormon instead of the Bible, as instructed by her parents! The Book of Mormon just appeared. SO cool.

In another house, we taught a woman about how our simple, 10 minute message could bless her family, and she proceeded to go down the street and fetch her two daughters so they could learn with us! And THEY are more interested than the mom is in our message! So that was awesome.

One lady sat and listened while her housekeeper was working around the house - suddenly, she stopped, joined the lesson and listened attentively. When Elder Yang gave the head of the house the Book of Mormon, the housekeeper excitedly asked, "Do you have one for me too??" She asked US for the Book of Mormon!!

In another example, the head of the home invited us in, learned about our special message with modern prophets, and said "I don't want your book. I don't want to hear anything!" But his son, who already is married with a family, accepted a Book of Mormon and an invitation to read and pray. So incredible. So grateful.

Last story I'll tell you about (there are MORE), we rang the doorbell of this nice home, and the automatic gate just opened. No one does that in Malaysia - they ALWAYS check who we are before they open it. Then the family started peeking out the windows and with really confused looks on their faces came out and started to talk to us. We're still not even sure if they opened the gate or if the Lord opened it for us. Then, it turns out that the lady who came out used to be the kindergarten teacher of the member (Sharon) working with us that day!

Every one of the stories above resulted in someone accepting the Book of Mormon and a commitment to read and pray about it. This week, we'll be working way hard to meet with all these people again. The work of the Lord is being hastened in Tawau - that's for SURE! So grateful for all these blessings and the opportunity to be a part of it! I know that it was through continued faith and faithfulness that Elder Yang and I were able to be given all this.

We're praying that we can be guided by the Spirit to follow up with all these people, and see them come (closer) unto Christ.

Also, this past week Elder Chong and I made 200 cream puffs for the people in our branch / congregation as we taught them in a special Sunday about how they can work with the missionaries and find friends for the members to teach.

Love you all! This work is really really really true! Just work hard and never stop until the Lord gives you success!!

Malaysiah Boleh!

Love!!

Elder Yang and I have the best time together
The Malaysians love colorful houses!
Hello!

JESSICA'S BIRTHDAY WAS YESTERDAY! Oh wait! It's still her birthday! #perksofbeingontheothersideoftheinternationaldateline HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY! What in the world is this world coming to! I love her so much and I'm grateful to be her brother. I wish I hadn't been so annoying to her when we were growing up, but hey, I have the rest of my life to make it up!

Update on the Sagarios: We are going to see them tonight, but I think they are doing okay. They may move back to the Philippines sometime, but I don't know for sure. Thank you for praying for them.

So....I've gained some weight out here. I'm not actually that fat and I'm probably in better shape than I ever have been (you can see in the picture I'm not fat, just now I have some flesh to me!) because of the gym and biking and stuff. But yeah, my waist is a little bigger than before! hahahaha

Do you want to know why I'm gaining? It's because in Southeast Asia the culture is "If you like me, you eat my food. The more you eat, the more you like me." So they sometimes say "Eat again, Elder! Elder, eat again!" Even when we're full! It's basically taboo for us to say "kenyang" or "full.' They stuff us every where we go.... hahahaha I'll slim up again when we're home because I won't have to eat more than I think is comfortable!!

Elder Yang and I love life and always laugh and have a great time together. He's an epic companion. We work hard together. And he is a magician with the hair clipper, I swear! My hair is getting some length on the top but shorter on the sides, so it looks much better now!

Something I'm learning out here is to let others be wrong. I always used to think that if they're wrong, they deserve to know, right?? Like if they're wrong, they totally ought to know. Well, that's not effective, and I'm glad I've been able to realize this on my mission and strive to get rid of this terrible tendency.

Also, I'm going to change other habits when I get home. What's more useful, spending an hour on Twitter or reading the complete works of William Shakespeare? I want to make an app that monitors how long you spend on other apps and can tell you when you've exceeded a preset time limit. How useful would that be?! I love to learn, and I realized today I can be a professional student as long as I live as I constantly seek to learn whatever I can get my hands on. No matter what my profession is, I can also be a student.

Well, time flies and I gotta run. But here's a thought for you: According to Elder Ballard, you all need to get a Preach My Gospel manual and start studying it. :) I'd love you to tell me about it!! Can't wait to hear about what you're learning!!! Also, please go read the talk by President Hinckley (if you have a minute) "Find the Lambs, Feed the Sheep."

And remember 2 Nephi 2:24 "But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things." God always knows what he's doing! I'm grateful to know that.

Malaysia Boleh!

Love,

Elder Clay Coleman

A Poignant Easter Lesson

My first Malaysian rainbow
Hello!

Wow. What a week. I'm grateful for all that has happened and know so much of it was heaven-sent, even when I did not fully understand why. This week definitely had its ups and its downs.

Let's start off with the good stuff!

On Monday, I finally played the much fabled national sport of Malaysia: Badminton. I'm gonna be pro before I get back. Not really, I'm not good hahaha but I'm working on it on preparation days!! When it's dang humid outside, it gets pretty nuts. We got some good deals on rackets, and it's basically going to be my future family's favorite sport, just a heads up to any potential candidates out there. Take it or leave it. Hahaha

This week, President Mains visited Tawau with his wife! It was great to see him. He is the man in charge of all the missionaries in Singapore and Malaysia. He is so busy, and I was grateful he took the time to come and visit with us.

Also this week! We got some RAIN! In Johor, there was always rain, but for the past 3 months, it's only rained about 3 times. Not so great! I was glad to see it and my first Malaysia rainbow which was huge!! hahaha Pretty cool.

I also went on splits this week with Elder Chong, a native from West Malaysia who is a Chinese Elder!! We are pretty good friends because we have been in Tawau together for the past 3 months. He's been teaching me Chinese and it was fun to contribute in lessons in a different language than Malay! Fun. Working on my Chinese every week.

Okay. Some of the not so great stuff. First, while I was on splits with Elder Chong, on the way home, we were biking when two reasonably sized dogs started chasing me. Well, Malaysia dogs are SKETCHY. I was going around 15+ miles per hour and I was having none of it. So. They continued chasing, and I kicked one away! However, that same action knocked me off balance, and my bike and I hit the ground with a satisfying thud. I was okay and the dogs took off, but my arm has a big wound (not really, but whatever). So, that was fun.

Also, on a more serious note. One of our main investigators, Brother Euphracio Sagario, passed away this Sunday on Easter. We received a call from his son, Brother Kenneth, around 3 am. It was pretty heartbreaking. We spent our Easter Sunday spending time with him, his mother Sister Evelyn, and their family. It's pretty crazy and it happened very abruptly. Here they have the funeral within 24 hours, so it was all handled quickly.

The overall feeling I had throughout the entire day is that I'm glad for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because He lived and died, and today lives again, I have no doubt I will see Brother Sagario again. None. The Spirit testified to my heart so strongly that their family will be reunited once more because of Jesus Christ. #becauseofhim (Thanks, McKelle, for telling me about that!)

This week I stumbled across a memoriam of President Hinckley, the previous President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an important and beloved man of incredible ability and faith. Whatever problem came to him and the Church at large, he would simply smile and say with confidence, "Oh, things will work out." President Hinckley would then go to work and press on in faith, doing all he could and trusting in the Lord to do the rest. What an example for all of us!

Okay. Time to get going. I love you all, and I would challenge you to look to the future with faith!

Love,

Elder Clay Coleman

The Sagario family. Brother Sagario was just 54 years old when he died.
Kenneth, on the left, recently returned home after serving a mission in the Philippines.

Jon and I attended a missionary choir concert in Mission Viejo on Easter Sunday and were able to meet Sister Chua, whom Clay mentioned in his email last week. She just arrived from Sabah three weeks ago and is serving in our mission here. She said she had prayed we would attend the concert so she could meet us. Such a sweet girl!

I Want to Do This Work Forever

Launching sky lanterns at Chinese New Years a few months back
It's Adrianne, Clay's mom here. This week he didn't send an actual weekly update for family and friends, but this little note was part of what he sent to me.

Mom!!! I'll be honest, it's the worst when I don't “talk" to you on P-day!! You're just the best.

In related news, Sister Tina (the one who always takes care of the elders) was born in 1966, just like you. So literally, she's basically my mom here.

Also! Sister Chua from Malaysia finally arrived in California! She's in Irvine right now. Oak Creek ward.

Fun that you and Jess saw Les Mis in NYC... Haven't even thought about that in forever! Man! Touched my heart that you and Jess cried with memories of me! Don't worry. I'll be back sooner than you can imagine or desire! I don't really like the sound of that--I want to do this work forever! And I'm saying that after having tons of people just say no and no and no because they already have a church. We get referrals, and they just say NO, we already have a church! Man. We're burning through potential investigators out here like crazy. Well, sometimes this work just wants to make you pull your hair out. But I think I'm coming to the conclusion that if you're doing life right, you're going to do hard things - it's just a part of real, worth-it life.

Love you more than you can know! Thank you for just doing the simple things like singing the church hymns to me when I was growing up! (see President Eyring’s recent General Conference talk.)

Sorry for not sending a big letter. Going to play badminton! That's a thing here!

Love you!

Flying across Malaysia
Hello all!

Sorry I didn't get an email off last week. We've had a very busy last two weeks that involved being out of our area for 6 whole days! Yikes. I'll get into the details in a bit.

First of all, transfers just came out! Elder Yang and I are staying here in Tawau, along with Elder Sutherland and Elder Chong, the Chinese speaking elders. It's going to be great, and we have high hopes for this upcoming transfer.

Last week, we had some great lessons. We have some new referrals that we haven't contacted yet, but we feel really good about it.

I don't remember how much I talked about Brother Sagario before, but he is the one with the injured leg. Well, he's doing way better and can now walk around and the wounds are getting smaller and smaller!! He's great. We taught him the first lesson last week, and he was very interested and really wanted to learn! We feel really great about him. This past Friday, we taught him about the Book of Mormon, and he has been reading it!! He has agreed to be baptized on May 17, so that will be this transfer! We are so excited.

So! Out in Malaysia, where the Church is still new, we have Districts and Branches instead of Stakes and Wards (which are terms we use for congregations in the LDS church). The District is based in Kota Kinabalu, the biggest city in Sabah. For district conference, the Tawau Elders flew to Kota Kinabalu! It was really great. The members came up in a 10 hour bus ride from the Southern bit of Sabah to KK and met us there. President Mains gave great trainings about members working with missionaries. I really connected with what he was saying, and so did the members. We think we're going to have even more success soon.

After District Conference, we flew to Singapore for Zone Conference, a missionary meeting! It was also really great. We got some great training from President and Sister Mains, and the Assistants to the President. President Mains spoke on being a Preach My Gospel Missionary, and his trainings were so on point. It was really a pleasure to be there and learn from him.

Finally, we got back on Wednesday - after flying from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to KK to Tawau. Apparently, it's 2700 miles total travel. I signed up for a frequent flyer card! hahahaha

This last week, Elder Yang and I have been going out finding a lot, trying to find those people in Tawau that are willing to listen to this message that will change their lives forever. I have been trying to focus on my motives for missionary work a lot lately. I think it's important to really try to love the people here and desire their happiness. That's why Elder Yang and I sweat and work and sweat some more out here. That's why we go hard - just to try and help these people find true and lasting happiness for their families and themselves. It's hard work but the most fulfilling work, too. I would ask for your continued prayers that we might have success bringing people unto Christ, to find out what this Church can do for them.

Here's a quote I read recently from a past leader of our Church:

"If we will always look for the best in others, in our friends, in our
neighbors, in our wife, in our husband, in our children, they will
turn out to be the most wonderful people in the world. On the other
hand, if we are looking for their weaknesses and faults and enlarge
upon them, these same people may become even despicable."
- N. Eldon Tanner (an apostle in our church)

It's so true. I really wasn't good about focusing on the good things about others while I was at home, and I really can't wait to come home and focus on the positives of my family and friends. I think this is a powerful lesson for all of us to learn - and it really hits me hard when I think about how we usually act the worst around the people we care about the most - our family. Anyways!! Hope you can find a way to implement that in your life this week!!

Love you all!! The work of the Lord will go forward, there is no doubt in my mind - but we, as members and missionaries, have to do all we can so that we can help it along. Pray about whom you can talk to about the Gospel and the Lord will tell you who needs it.

Love you all again!!

Malaysia Airlines' Newest Frequent Flyer

Tawau to Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, and then back the same way

Elder Coleman spent his weekend flying across Malaysia and then on preparation day making his way to Singapore for Zone Conference. His mission necessitates a lot of flying between areas; this past week alone he flew 2700 miles (2394 nm).  He didn't get time for emailing much this week but sent us this sweet note:

Zone conference took my day for email so sorry maybe email tomorrow or day after, love you!!! (Wooooof.... I fly so much I went and signed up for a frequent flyer account for Malaysia Air.) Your prayers and fasting and putting his name on the temple prayer roll was not in vain. Brother Sagario is healing and walking and is now beginning to learn the Gospel! So sick!!! Love you so much! Keep praying!

I got the Easter package! BEST THING OF MY LIFE! Every one keeps calling me spoiled, but I just know that every day I'm learning how to love my future kids and show them I really care! Thank you thank you thank you! I always pray and just thank Heavenly Father that I have a mom and dad like you. Thank you for everything you do for me and KEEP DOING MISSIONARY WORK. We've got to get as many people as possible ready for Christ's coming!! Love you again!
